Staunton has a strong artistic and cultural base centered on the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriar’s Playhouse. Numerous venues offer dining and live music. The restored Visulite Theater offers live broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera. Organizations such as ShenanArts and the Oak Grove Theater showcase the performing arts.

Just east of Staunton, the City of Waynesboro with a population of about 18,000 is nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. Located on South River, Waynesboro is home to Fishburne Military School and the Waynesboro Players, a community theater organization, and is well known for its Fall Foliage Festival and Art Show.
